What is FUT?
Follicular Unit Transplantation, or s trip harvesting, is the gold standard and most widely used method of hair restoration. This method involves surgically removing a thin strip of the scalp that contains thousands of healthy hair follicles. These are then individually isolated, one by one and implanted into the area being restored.
FUT with Dr. Asaria begins with a consultation. During this time, the two of you establish precise cosmetic goals. He then designs a surgical plan to fulfill this exact cosmetic outcome. This plan includes where the new hairline will start, along with its general shape and appearance.
Next the “donor site” is established—this is usually located on the back of the head. This area is a non-testosterone zone which means that the hair follicles in it survive most of your lifetime and are ideal for continuing their life on the receptive area.
A scalpel is used to remove the strip of healthy scalp containing hair. The strip is usually around 1 centimeter wide and can be as long as 30 centimeters. This strip is then placed in specialized solution that mimics the body’s own fluids. This solution maintains the tissue and maximizes the life of the follicles.
Next, Dr. Asaria carefully excises follicular units from the strip of scalp. Follicular units are groups of 1 to 4 hairs and their follicles naturally growing on your scalp. Each hair is isolated one by one under high power magnification.
Now Dr. Asaria starts with the actual hair implantation based on the implantation plan he designed specifically for you, implanting the follicular units into very precise locations across your scalp. FUT allows for thousands of follicles to be implanted in one surgery. Every single hair is implanted individually. The direction of growth, pattern of angulation, and density are carefully considered.
The recovery time for FUT can vary. For most patients it takes 7-10 days for the grafts to fully “set.” After about 2 weeks, the newly grafted hair will start to shed for a period of one to two months. This is all part of the process: the transplanted hair sheds while the follicles continue to adapt to the new area in which they now “live.”
In 2-5 months, you will notice your new, permanent hair growing back, and at 6 months it will be ready to be groomed and styled.
Because of Dr. Asaria’s background in facial plastic surgery, he is able to create the best possible scar in the donor site. Typically this scar is less than 3mm wide and is almost completely invisible. The only patients who are not good candidates are those who wish to completely shave the back of their heads. Even with short hair, the incision is usually exceptionally well hidden.
Thousands of men and women have benefitted from FUT. Dr. Asaria takes pride in improving the quality of life of his patients and strives to provide quality FUT hair implants in Toronto. Below are some of his patients.
