What is FUT?

Follicular Unit Transplantation, or strip harvesting, is the gold standard and most widely used method of hair restoration. This method involves surgically removing a thin strip of the scalp that contains thousands of healthy hair follicles. The hair follicles are then individually isolated under a microscope, one by one, and implanted into the area being restored.

FUT Procedure

FUT with Dr. Asaria always begins with a consultation at Hair Toronto. During this time, you will mutually establish precise cosmetic goals. He then will design a surgical plan to fulfill this exact cosmetic outcome. This plan will outline the cosmetic design of your hair restoration procedure.

Next, the donor site is established. This is always located at the back of the scalp. This area is a non-testosterone zone which means that the hair follicles extracted from it will survive most of your lifetime. This is ideal to ensure a successful take rate and continued life in the receptive area of hair transplantation.

On the day of your procedure, you will be numbed with a local anesthetic. A scalpel is used to remove a strip of healthy scalp containing hair. The strip is usually 1 centimetre wide, and can be as long as 30 centimetres. This strip is then placed in a specialized solution which mimics the body’s own fluids. This solution maintains the tissue and maximizes the life of the follicles.

Next, Dr. Asaria and his exceptional hair transplant team will carefully excise individual follicles from the strip. Follicular units are groups of 1 to 4 hairs and their follicles are found naturally growing on the scalp. Each hair is isolated one by one under high power magnification.

Recovery time

The recovery time for FUT can vary. For most patients it takes 7-10 days for the grafts to fully “set.” After about 2 weeks, the newly grafted hair will start to shed for a period of one to two months. This is all part of the process: the transplanted hair sheds while the follicles continue to adapt to the new area in which they now “live.”

In 2-5 months, you will notice your new, permanent hair growing back, and at 6 months it will be ready to be groomed and styled.

Scarring

Because of Dr. Asaria’s background in facial plastic surgery, he is able to create the best possible scar in the donor site. Typically this scar is less than 3mm wide and is almost completely invisible. The only patients who are not good candidates are those who wish to completely shave the back of their heads. Even with short hair, the incision is usually exceptionally well hidden.

FUT Hair Transplant FAQs

How many grafts can be harvested in one FUT session?

FUT allows for harvesting thousands of grafts in one session since it involves extracting a full strip of scalp. This means more coverage and denser results compared to methods that harvest one follicle at a time.

Does the FUT donor scar affect hair regrowth?

Thanks to Dr. Asaria’s combination of facial plastic surgery expertise and precision suturing, the FUT scar is typically very thin, under 3 mm, and blends seamlessly into the surrounding hair, even when it’s cut fairly short.

Is FUT right for me if I want to try wearing my hair very short?

FUT is ideal for patients who don’t plan to shave their heads. The narrow donor scar means it stays hidden even with shorter hair, but if a shaved scalp is on your grooming radar, other methods like FUE might offer better concealment.

How soon can I go back to work after FUT?

Most patients return to non-physical work within 2–5 days. If your job involves physical activity, you may need a little more downtime to avoid straining the donor area.
